Introduction to Hybrid Work Model

“Hybrid work,” where employees spend some of their work days in the physical office and the rest of their work days working remotely, is emerging as a novel form of organizing knowledge work globally (Teevan, 2021; Cutter, 2021). During the pandemic, business organizations had no other choice than switching to remote work which is also known as working from home. Remote working is defined as “a flexible work arrangement whereby workers work in locations, remote from their central offices or production facilities, the worker has no personal contact with co‐workers there, but is able to communicate with them using technology” (Di Martino & Wirth, 1990, p. 530). Even though the remote working came as a solution for a problem, later most of employees and the management started to accept it and became comfortable with it. After the pandemic, organizations planned to reopen and start the normal physically presence working environment, employees wanted to work remote. The management could not argue with that too because remote work actually giving good results as well. Several studies shows that the productivity while working remotely from home is better than working in an office setting. On average, those who work from home spend 10 minutes less a day being unproductive, work one more day a week, and are 47% more productive (Owl Labs, 2021).

With the positives, there are many downsides of the remote work model. Proper communication between co-workers will be missed. A paper by Yang et al. (2021) echoes concerns about how remote work might negatively affect the production of creative work if workers communicate with fewer colleagues. Staying motivated will be hard because there is no active supervision. Human is an animal which is made to become social. But in the remote work, social interaction will be not found. Because of these problems, organizations started to adapt into hybrid work models. Iqbal and Khalid (2021) states that a hybrid system occurs in a situation where there is the need to balance two kinds of demands equitably to avoid any clash or conflict. The hybrid system is an initiative introduced to cater to the specific needs of a system or organization’s active parties. These models are unique to the needs of organizations. Purpose of these systems is to mitigate the cons of remote work and move forward with the positives. According to the need, organizations intend to maintain a physically open office. Employees are no longer required to report to work at a set time every day; instead, they can come in when needed and work remotely at other times.

Many businesses allow their staff members to work remotely, including IT firms that have asked all of their staff to do so. There are many successful hybrid work model companies now such as Dropbox, Reddit, Figma and Coinbase A lot of businesses aim to combine remote work with in-person presence. Whatever the case, the hybrid work model has become the standard and will continue to be so.

  1. Agreed on the content above Himanshu, In addition to that, because of the flexibility that such employment offers, according to Michael and Smith (2015), working remotely increases job satisfaction among employees. For example, some women prefer working remotely so they can balance work and childcare. Further, working remotely gives them flexibility in their schedules and enables them to save money on lunch, transportation, and work clothes, while there are drawbacks, including that it makes it harder for them to maintain a work-life balance and due to issues with concentration and effectiveness (Elagina, 2020).

  2. Good topic Manula, In addition, With many businesses embracing the hybrid work arrangement, the side benefits keep getting unveiled. Every employer and business owner is always on the lookout for ways to reduce the cost of running his business. That is why instead of hiring many hands to get a job done, an employer would rather go for the guy with the ability to multitask. With hybridity comes the advantage of the reduction in the cost of running a physical office. (Kanwar Muhammad Javed Iqbal 2021)

  3. Agreed. Location shouldn't be the primary consideration for leaders when considering the future of work. What we should really be concentrating on is how we can keep our staff engaged and productive in various contexts, not whether it's in-person or remote. Companies are more likely to retain existing talent, draw in fresh talent, and satisfy and sometimes even surpass customer expectations if they discover creative ways to engage their staff and customers. Both employers and employees gain from hybrid work. Instead of paying for office space, employers can invest in their workforce and expanding their firm. Additionally, without being constrained by their location, employees can increase their general well-being, lower their commute-related expenses, and have access to more professional prospects (The hybrid work model playbook 1/46 The hybrid work model playbook 2/46, n.d.)

    1. Thanks for your comment Ranga. I like to add to your comment that eventually work is going to become employer-led to employee led. To succeed at work in the future, businesses must follow suit. This means finding technologies that make their lives easier and finding better ways for employees to work. Doing so will require strategy and listening to the unique needs of your employees. But if done right, your business will find success easily in the future of work (Newman, 2022).

Some people like remote work because it allows them to work and life balance. Additionally, working from home allows people to have more flexibility with their schedules and save money on lunch, transportation, and work attire. However, there are negatives, such as difficulties maintaining a work-life balance and problems with attention and effectiveness (Prof. S. K. Singh & Vivek Tiwari, 2011).

Hi Manjula, good start and a unique topic to touch on. further, I would wish to add that when talking about the evolution of the hybrid work system, it is essential to talk about why the need for a hybrid arrangement in the first place. With several businesses expanding their reach across countries with the aid of digital marketing, entrepreneurship serves as a focal point to the study of the rise of the work’s hybrid system. Digitalization has been a tool of advantage in many entrepreneurs’ hands, such that what used to seem impossible many years back is now being achieved by individual businesses (La Porta, 2021).

  17. Great post Manula, The term "hybrid work" refers to a mixed approach that combines an office layout based on physical presence with a remote working setup in its most basic form (Cook, Mor, and Santos, 2020). This approach can be used in a number of different ways, such as having some employees work from home while others do so in the office, or having the same employees work in the office only on certain days and during certain hours while working from home the rest of the time (Iqbal, Khalid, and Barykin, 2021).
